Gas Log Sets

kodiak 48 log set

Utah Air Systems offers a selection of more than a dozen fireplaces on display in our showroom, most are in stock and ready for installation within a day or so.    When choosing a gas log insert it is important to remember that there are two very different choices.

  • Decorative Logs

    • Decorative Gas Log sets are attractive and typically more efficient than their wood burning alternative, however they do require an open chimney.  While they do generate a fair amount of radiant heat- the downside to a decorative log set is  that the air from the room is drawn into the fire and vented out the chimney, this process is similar to running an exhaust fan, creating a vacuum in the home, pulling in cold air through any weak point in the home.  Typically fresh air is drawn in from leaky doors and windows, making other parts of the house colder.  While this choice is the most attractive- it is most appropriate for its ambiance and should not be considered when heat is the primary reason for the fire.   Many of these Log Sets are installed in restaurants, hotel lobby’s etc.
  • Vent Free Log Setscumb char log set

  • This option is ideal when heat is the primary function of the fire.  The log set is typically not as attractive as the decorative set, however they operate at 99.9% efficiency.  This system does not require the chimney to be open- the damper door can be closed and the chimney capped, eliminating the drafty chimney when the fire is off.  There is no Vacuum affect with this type of log set and it heats very effectively.  In most cases the log set is at least 20% more efficient than the homes furnace.  Installation of this type of log set will reduce the homes gas bill.  The downside to a vent free fire is that it interacts with the air in the home.  It’s main byproduct of combustion is humidity which is certainly desired in our dry climate, however when the fire is not operated for a period of time, dust can accumulate on the log set and when it is started it can put off an odor.  Vent free fire products are recommended when heat is the primary function and they are used often.
